Avaada Group announced Friday its collaboration with Swiss chemical giant Casale to develop India’s largest green ammonia plant in Gopalpur, Odisha. The plant will have an annual production of 1,500 tons per day.

According to a statement, this milestone project marks a significant advancement in Avaada’s mission to drive decarbonization, innovation and sustainable industrial growth, further solidifying its role in India’s clean energy revolution.

The statement added that the facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy, utilizing Casale’s ammonia production technology to ensure a carbon-free process.

Casala’s role in the project

As part of the collaboration, Casale will provide Avaada with a green ammonia process license, a basic engineering package, proprietary equipment and a detailed engineering review.

“This green ammonia plant reflects our vision of creating a carbon-free future while driving India’s green energy revolution. Collaborating with Casale enables us to leverage world-class expertise to deliver a facility that is both innovative and transformative,” said Avaada Group Chairman Vineet Mittal in a statement.

Mittal added that collaborating with Casale will strengthen India’s energy independence and showcase the nation’s potential to lead globally in green industrial advancements.

Casale CEO Federico Zardi said, “Casale is honored to partner with Avaada in delivering India’s largest grassroots green ammonia plant.”

Reducing Carbon Footprint

The facility will significantly reduce carbon emissions by replacing fossil fuel-based ammonia production with renewable energy while fostering India’s leadership in sustainable industrial practices.

Last month, the Mumbai-based sustainable energy conglomerate completed the refinancing of nine projects across its business divisions, raising ₹8,500 crore ($1 billion) to advance its renewable energy initiatives across India.

The refinanced projects span utility-scale independent power producer ventures, large-scale agri-photovoltaic installations, merchant power generation, commercial and industrial projects and solar module manufacturing.

The refinancing involved a mix of public and private lenders, including State Bank of India, Union Bank, NABFID, and Power Finance Corporation on the public sector side, alongside private entities such as Standard Chartered, Axis Bank, Yes Bank, Tata Capital and NIIF.

The funds will support projects, including utility-scale solar developments, decentralized agri-photovoltaic initiatives under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan, or the PM-KUSUM scheme, and advanced solar module manufacturing facilities.

The PM-KUSUM scheme is a government program that helps farmers install solar irrigation pumps and solar power plants, helping India align with its goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
