Amazon Invests in 3 New Wind Projects to Boost India’s Renewable Energy
Amazon commits to three new wind farms in India, expanding its clean energy portfolio to power 1.3 million homes.
Online retail giant Amazon announced on Thursday that it will invest in three new wind farms in India, further advancing its commitment to clean energy.
According to a company statement, the projects in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu will contribute more than 379 megawatts of renewable energy.
With these latest additions, Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio in India comprises 53 solar and wind projects.
These initiatives will generate over 4 million megawatt-hours of carbon-free energy annually — enough to power more than 1.3 million Indian homes. The portfolio includes nine utility-scale solar and wind farms and 44 onsite solar arrays installed on Amazon facilities throughout the country.
Commitment to Sustainability
“Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward in both India and around the world, which will help us all address climate change at scale,” said Avinash Shekhar, head of energy and water strategy for Amazon Web Services in the Asia-Pacific, Japan, and China regions.
“As the top corporate purchaser of solar and wind energy since 2020, we’ve invested in more than 600 projects globally, including over 50 in India. These efforts are part of our Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2040,” added Shekhar.
The three new wind projects include a 100 MW wind farm at CleanMax Koppal in Karnataka, a 99 MW wind project at BluPine Solapur in Maharashtra, and a 180 MW wind project at JSW Energy Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu. These projects reinforce Amazon’s sustainability initiatives and align with India’s broader climate and energy goals.
Government and Industry Support
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is rapidly emerging as a global leader in the clean energy transition. Investments from companies like Amazon are accelerating this progress,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s minister of railways, electronics and information technology, and information and broadcasting in the statement.
Amazon’s sustainability investments are crucial as India aims to expand its clean energy infrastructure while meeting growing power demands.
Shripad Yesso Naik, minister of state of power and new and renewable energy, said: “Investments in wind and solar projects are crucial for achieving our renewable energy targets and ensuring energy security. These projects will not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also generate employment and foster economic growth in local communities.”
Amazon has already met its 100 percent renewable energy goal globally seven years ahead of schedule, achieving this milestone in 2023.
Its clean energy projects worldwide now produce enough power to support the equivalent of 8.3 million US homes.
Beyond powering Amazon’s operations, these renewable energy projects provide significant local benefits. They support job creation, enhance the local tax base, and provide carbon-free energy to the communities where Amazon employees, customers, and vendors live and work.
As India continues to scale its renewable energy capabilities, Amazon’s growing portfolio signals a strong commitment to advancing the nation’s clean energy future.
