NGEL, Honeywell UOP Sign MoU to Explore Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
NTPC Green Energy and Honeywell UOP partner to explore sustainable aviation fuel production using green hydrogen in India.
NTPC Green Energy Ltd. and Honeywell UOP India Pvt. Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to jointly explore the production of sustainable aviation fuel.
Under the agreement, the two firms planned to conduct a feasibility study leveraging Honeywell’s proprietary eFining technology, using carbon dioxide emissions captured from NTPC’s power plants along with green hydrogen, NGEL said in a statement.
The collaboration formed a key part of NGEL’s broader ambitions to develop a green hydrogen hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh, a 1,200-acre project focused on green chemicals and sustainable manufacturing.
The MoU was exchanged on April 25 between DMR Panda, executive director at NTPC, and Ranjit Kulkarni, vice president and general manager at Honeywell UOP.
Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub Gathers Momentum
The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub project, which had its foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Jan. 8, 2025, highlighted India’s commitment to promoting green energy and a sustainable future.
Developed jointly by NGEL and the New & Renewable Energy Development Corp. of Andhra Pradesh, it became the first Green Hydrogen Hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
NGEL and NREDCAP had signed a joint venture agreement to develop 20 gigawatts of renewable energy projects, 1,500 tonnes per day of green hydrogen, and 7,500 TPD of green hydrogen derivatives.
The venture would also develop green methanol, green urea and SAF, making it one of India’s largest integrated green hydrogen production facilities.
The project was expected to attract an investment of around ₹1,85,000 crore ($22 billion) to Andhra Pradesh, create significant employment opportunities and contribute to India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
In addition to its efforts in Andhra Pradesh, NGEL signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Rajasthan to develop 25 GW of renewable energy projects.
Partnership Aims to Boost India’s Green Energy Transition
The Pudimadaka project, spread across 1,600 acres, included plans for a manufacturing facility, a green chemical zone, a chemical storage terminal, port infrastructure, a transmission corridor, a 7 GW substation, an 80 MLD desalination plant and an effluent treatment plant, aiming to create a comprehensive operational framework.
By combining Honeywell UOP’s expertise in sustainable aviation fuel production with NTPC’s push into renewable energy and green hydrogen, the companies hoped to take a significant step toward decarbonizing the aviation sector.
The initiative also aligned with NTPC’s goal of achieving a 60 GW renewable energy portfolio by 2032 and reinforced India’s broader push towards a green energy transition and net-zero emissions.
