Essar Energy Transition, SSE to Launch 40 MW Green Hydrogen Plant in UK
The 40 MW Gowy Green Hydrogen project could be operational as early as 2028, with feasibility studies completed and site works underway.
Essar Energy Transition Hydrogen and the UK’s gas-fired power generator SSE have partnered to set up a green hydrogen production facility in northwest England.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the 40-megawatt-electrical facility will deliver hydrogen to industrial off-takers in the region to support them in decarbonizing their operations.
Known as Gowy Green Hydrogen, the plant takes its name from the River Gowy and the nearby Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve.
The statement added that Gowy Green Hydrogen could be operational as early as 2028, with feasibility studies completed and design and site investigation works underway.
A planning application is expected to move forward in 2025 before the two parties make any final investment decision.
The UK strongly focuses on delivering low-carbon hydrogen, aiming to produce 10 gigawatts by 2030. Low-carbon hydrogen provides a clean power system and enables hard-to-abate industries to decarbonize.

Hannah Bronwin, director of business development for SSE Thermal, said: “Scaling up green hydrogen production will be essential when it comes to decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries and solving the clean power puzzle. We’re excited to work with EET Hydrogen to develop Gowy Green Hydrogen.”
SSE is developing hydrogen projects across the value chain in recognition of its central role in net zero. That includes green and blue hydrogen production facilities, hydrogen storage and power generation.
