Tata Motors, Tata Power to Build 131 MW Wind-Solar Project to Power Auto Plants
The project will generate 300 million units of renewable electricity annually and power six facilities across Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Tata Motors and Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. said on Monday they have signed a power purchase agreement to jointly develop a 131 megawatt wind-solar hybrid project, marking a significant step toward their clean energy and net-zero targets.
The project, expected to generate 300 million units of renewable electricity annually, will power six Tata Motors manufacturing facilities across Maharashtra and Gujarat. The renewable energy supply is projected to offset over 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
The long-term agreement reflects a co-investment model between Tata Motors, India’s largest automobile manufacturer, and TPREL, a subsidiary of Tata Power. Both companies seek to advance India’s energy transition and reduce industrial emissions.
Net-Zero and RE-100 Commitments
The renewable energy supplied from the hybrid project will contribute significantly to Tata Motors’ RE-100 target — a global pledge to use 100 percent renewable electricity — ahead of its 2030 deadline. It also supports the automaker’s broader ambition to reach net-zero emissions across its operations.
“This project reinforces our commitment to integrating renewable energy into our operations and reducing our carbon footprint,” said Vishal Badshah, vice president of operations, commercial vehicles, Tata Motors. “It reflects our broader purpose of delivering mobility solutions that are sustainable at every stage—from production to performance.”
The wind-solar hybrid system combines the strengths of two renewable sources to offer greater reliability and cost efficiency. It will power production lines for both commercial and passenger vehicles, underscoring the company’s commitment to green manufacturing.
Boosting Green Manufacturing in India
Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle operations will also benefit from the project. “This is a defining step towards making our Passenger Vehicle Operations greener, smarter, and more resilient,” said Pramod Choudhary, vice president of operations, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. “It complements India’s green transition and helps us build a future-ready automotive business.”
The partnership adds momentum to India’s growing push for industrial decarbonization and clean energy adoption. Tata Power Renewable Energy, which operates one of the country’s largest portfolios of renewable assets, continues to play a key role in supporting corporates in achieving their sustainability goals.
