TP Solar Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd., on Tuesday announced the commencement of commercial production of solar cells at its 2 gigawatts capacity plant in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.

In a press statement, the manufacturing facility is India’s largest single-location solar cell and module plant and will boost domestic manufacturing of these clean energy components.

The plant is expected to ramp up production and add another 2 GW capacity over the next four to six weeks, reaching peak production within the next few months.

Commissioned in October 2023, the solar module production line at the plant has produced 1,250 MW of solar modules to date.

“The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenization in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency,” said Praveer Sinha, CEO and managing director of Tata Power, in the statement.

He said that the company is committed to making solar power accessible to all and leading the way in supporting the country’s vision for a net-zero carbon future.

Technology Prowess

Tata Motors has committed nearly ₹4,300 crore toward establishing this facility. It is equipped with advanced TOPCon and Mono Perc technology, enabling high-efficiency production of solar cells and modules.

TOPCon or tunnel oxide passivated contact is a cutting-edge solar cell technology with higher efficiency compared to traditional solar cells like passivated emitter rear cells. They tend to have a lower temperature coefficient, meaning they perform better in hotter conditions.

The technology can enhance the bifaciality of solar panels, allowing them to capture sunlight from both the front and back sides, increasing overall energy production.

In addition to the Tirunelveli plant, the company also operates a manufacturing facility established in 1992 in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

This facility has a production capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells. It has supplied 3.73 GW of solar modules and 2.26 GW of solar cells to date.

Tata Power aims to increase its renewable energy portfolio from 41 percent to 70 percent by 2030, positioning itself as a critical player in the global energy transition.
