Waaree Energies Launches India’s Largest Solar Cell Gigafactory in Gujarat
Waaree Energies launches 5.4 GW solar gigafactory in Gujarat, boosting India’s renewable energy and self-reliance goals.
Waaree Energies Ltd., India’s largest solar energy company, has inaugurated a 5.4-gigawatt solar cell manufacturing facility in Gujarat, marking a major step in the country’s push for energy self-sufficiency.
The new gigafactory, located in Chikhli, spans 150 acres and is among the largest in India. The facility was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, alongside Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and CR Paatil. Senior state officials and industry leaders were also present.
Pralhad Joshi, India’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy, said the project bolsters the country’s commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and strengthens its role in the global renewable energy sector.
“The growth of India’s renewable energy sector began in Gujarat under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership as Chief Minister. Today, the state continues to set benchmarks. This facility not only advances India’s clean energy goals but also solidifies our position as a global leader in solar manufacturing,” Joshi said at the event.
Commitment to Energy Independence
Waaree Energies Chairman and Managing Director Hitesh Doshi emphasized that the plant is a significant step toward India’s energy independence and global technological leadership.
“Our gigafactory is more than infrastructure — it is a commitment to innovation and self-sufficiency,” Doshi said. “With every solar cell produced here, we are reinforcing India’s economic self-determination and clean energy leadership.”
The facility is expected to create over 9,500 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect employment opportunities, supporting local economic growth. Equipped with high-efficiency solar cell technology, the plant aligns with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Waaree Energies, founded in 1990 and headquartered in Mumbai, operates globally with a solar module manufacturing capacity of approximately 15 GW, including facilities in India and the US.
The company provides solar panel manufacturing, engineering, procurement, construction services, and project development solutions.
India has been aggressively expanding its solar manufacturing capacity to reduce reliance on imports, particularly from China, and to meet its ambitious renewable energy targets.
