In a major push for eco-friendly transportation, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a complete waiver on road tax for hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric cars. Leading automakers Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are expected to see a significant rise in sales with this move. Their popular hybrid models, like the Grand Vitara, Innova Hycross, and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, will become more attractive to consumers due to the reduced upfront cost.

Reports suggest a 100% rebate on road tax for these vehicles. This translates to substantial savings, particularly for SUVs like the Grand Vitara and Hyryder, where registration costs could drop by nearly ₹1.8 lakh. For premium models like the Innova Hycross, the on-road price reduction could be as high as ₹3 lakh depending on the variant.

This tax break is a temporary amendment to the existing EV policy and will be valid until October 2025. This limited-time offer aims to jumpstart hybrid adoption without requiring a long-term budgetary commitment from the government. This move is expected to benefit existing players and potentially encourage other manufacturers to introduce more hybrid models in the Indian market.

This policy shift by Uttar Pradesh could also pave the way for other states to follow suit, further accelerating the adoption of hybrid vehicles as a viable alternative to traditional gasoline and purely electric options.
