Apple Inc. said on Wednesday it has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60 percent compared to 2015 levels, pushing toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral across its entire business by 2030.

The milestone, revealed in Apple’s annual Environmental Progress Report, comes as the company marks Earth Day with new commitments and customer recycling incentives.

Apple said its emissions reduction effort in 2024 alone helped avoid an estimated 41 million metric tons of greenhouse gases.

“We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’re making toward Apple 2030,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives. “As we get closer to 2030, the work gets even harder — and we’re meeting the challenge with innovation, collaboration, and urgency.”

The iPhone maker is focusing on cutting emissions by 75 percent from 2015 levels before offsetting the remainder with high-quality carbon credits.

Clean Energy Push and Supply Chain Pledges

Apple also highlighted its progress in adopting clean energy. The company said its suppliers now operate with 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity, up more than 17 percent from the previous year, avoiding 21.8 million metric tons of emissions in 2024.

The company is also targeting high-emission areas like semiconductor and display manufacturing. As of this year, 26 of Apple’s semiconductor and display suppliers have pledged to cut fluorinated greenhouse gases by at least 90 percent by 2030. These potent gases are used in chipmaking and are among the most climate-damaging.

Recycled Materials, Water Savings and Earth Day Incentives

In materials, Apple reported that 99 percent of the rare earth elements in its product magnets and 99 percent of the cobalt in Apple-designed batteries are now sourced from recycled materials. Both are significant components in the company’s products.

Efforts to reduce waste and conserve water were also highlighted. In 2024, Apple’s suppliers diverted 600,000 metric tons of waste from landfills and saved 14 billion gallons of freshwater through the company’s clean water initiative.

The company is also introducing more carbon-neutral products, including new MacBooks and Apple Watches, which incorporate high recycled content and lower-emission manufacturing practices.

In celebration of Earth Day, Apple is offering a special in-store incentive to customers who recycle their old devices through May 16.
