The United Nations World Tourism Organization and the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance announced a new partnership to create a universal ESG framework for the tourism sector.

According to a UNWTO, the collaboration aims to streamline how tourism businesses measure and report their sustainability efforts.

The organization has already developed an ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses in partnership with the University of Oxford SDG Impact Lab. Still, the new agreement will see the framework refined and tested with the help of the WSHA.

“This partnership is a major step forward in making tourism more sustainable,” Zoritsa Urosevic, executive director of UNWTO, said in the press note.

“By working together, we can create a level playing field for businesses and help consumers make more informed choices,” She added.

“We are excited to join forces with UNWTO to develop a common ESG framework. This will help our industry become more transparent, accountable and ultimately sustainable,” WSHA CEO Glenn Mandziuk said.

The new framework builds on the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism, which all 193 UN Member States have endorsed.

It will also complement the Alliance’s Net Positive Hospitality Pathway, which focuses on harmonizing metrics and KPIs within the hospitality industry.

As tourism businesses face increasing pressure to disclose their ESG performance, the new framework is crucial for driving positive change in the sector.
