Maruti Suzuki India plans to set up close to 25,000 electric vehicle charging points, according to The Economic Times.

The financial daily reported on Wednesday that the car manufacturer plans to leverage its network of over 5,100 service centers in 2,300 cities and is in talks with oil marketing companies and energy firms to create a charging ecosystem.

The undersized charging ecosystem has been a massive deterrent to the adoption of electric mobility in this country, the report said.

The newspaper quoted a source saying, “They (Maruti) have started surveying their dealer workshops for charging points. The plan is to have at least one dedicated bay and two charge points at its service centers. The company has already started training service mechanics in Bengaluru.”

Empowering the Ecosystem

The report also cited OMC insiders confirming the carmaker reached out to them to book space for EV charging and service points in their retail outlets.

“Maruti has reached out to us. The terms and conditions are still under discussion,” a senior official at a state-run OMC told ET.

However, a Maruti Suzuki spokesperson declined to comment.

“We will come up with a range of solutions for our EV customers to remove their concerns about owning an EV,” Maruti Suzuki managing director Hisashi Takeuchi had said last week on the sidelines of the 64th Annual Convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers in New Delhi.

“We will use the strength of our network to give confidence to the customers for after-sale support,” he had said.
