The Science Based Targets initiative on Tuesday released a draft revision of its Corporate Net-Zero Standard for public consultation, aiming to address key barriers to corporate decarbonization and enhance the framework for businesses setting emissions targets.

The proposed update seeks to facilitate action on Scope 3 emissions — those generated across a company’s value chain — which more than half of surveyed businesses cited as the biggest challenge in their net-zero commitments.

The new draft standard introduces flexible options such as setting targets based on green procurement and revenue generation rather than absolute emissions reductions.

Additionally, the revised standard focuses on emissions reduction while exploring mechanisms to scale climate finance and carbon removals.

It also proposes a framework for recognizing companies investing in Beyond Value Chain Mitigation and includes interim targets for carbon removal to address residual emissions.

Leadership Perspectives on the Revised Standard

“The SBTi has always been at the frontier of climate action,” said Francesco Starace, chair of SBTi. “This draft standard addresses complex, emerging issues and lays the foundation to enable more companies to move further and faster towards net-zero.”

The update also introduces streamlined requirements for medium-sized companies in developing markets and small and medium enterprises to encourage broader participation in climate action.

Moreover, it sets out an assessment and communication framework to enhance corporate accountability and recognize industry leaders in decarbonization.

Alberto Carillo Pineda, chief technical officer at SBTi, emphasized that the revision reflects lessons learned from thousands of businesses engaged with the initiative, as well as insights from regulators, NGOs and policymakers worldwide.

“This is an iterative process, and public consultation will help us refine the standard to ensure it drives large-scale impact effectively,” Pineda said.

Public Consultation Process

The consultation runs from March 18 to June 1 and invites businesses and other stakeholders to provide feedback through the SBTi’s Consultation Guide and associated webinars. The input will help shape the final version of the standard, ensuring it remains both scientifically rigorous and practical for corporate implementation.
